Forgiveness Phenomena Nearly every person on the earth holds a grudge or emotion inside of him or her self that tears them apart. The feeling of mistrust, hurt, and anger wrapped into one ball. This may seem all too familiar, however not one human being can deny holding one of these feelings at some point in time. Of all the diseases and illnesses this plagues all the people of the world. I'm talking about the emotions we hold inside until we forgive the one who had caused pain on our life. How much can a person forgive? This is the question that we all must ask ourselves. This is the question that Mitchell Wright had to ask himself. We all recall the event that took place on March 34 of last year (1998). That was the day that two middle school boys decided to play sniper. Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden killed four of their classmates and one teacher, Mrs. Wright. Four families lost a child and one son lost his mother. Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden pulled the fire alarm to lure the students and teachers outside, they planned to shoot above the heads of their classmates and teachers, however that is far from what it seemed. Though the two boys cried that they only planned to only give students and teachers a scare, they fired 22 shots. Five shots, fired by Johnson, directly hit one student in the head, two girls in the knee area, and Mrs. Wright in the chest and knee area. This did not and to this day does not feel or look like a joke. So how can those families go on? How is Mitchell Wright going to explain to his son how why is mother is gone? Most importantly, how will those two boys be forgiven for taking the lives of five loved and loving people? The answer to all of these is in one word, forgiveness. This word hold much more than the words, "I forgive you", " I'm sorry", rather they involve reaching in to the bottom of your heart and soul, and confrontation. These two may not seem to go together but more than we realize, they do. Research and facilities have been created and built to study the effects that forgiving and not forgiving have on people. Everett Worthington is the director of the Templeton Foundation Campaign for Forgiveness Research. Worthington is a psychologist in Virginia who studies the physiological effects of forgiveness among chimpanzees and on the pulse and sweat glands of humans. Imagine sitting in a chair with electrodes stuck to your head, a tone plays in the back round and a memory comes to mind, one that you hold a grudge for, and you begin to act it out. Another tone plays and a pleasant memory of empathizing comes to mind. For 16 seconds you rehearse each memory that is brought on by a different tone, while your heart rate and blood pressure are constantly measured. This is what would happen if you were to volunteer at the research facilities at Templeton. Those who did volunteer were subject to this testing, and for many it was a lesson to learn that they need to forgive. The results of the heart ate and blood pressure showed "robust" differences between those memories that were tied to a grudge versus those that were tied with forgiveness. This was not surprising to some but for others it was a slap in the face. Robert Enright, a few years ago, trashed the idea that forgiveness had any effect on health. He was quoted as saying, 'Only wimps forgive'. Enright is a psychology at the University of Wisconsin, now says that they 'are really on a roll'. With the results showing that the stress level was "significantly higher" when a person considered revenge. Although the person may laugh and joke about such and event internally the signs show that it is harmful if enough is endured. So what does this have to do with Mitchell Wright? Mitchell Wright is faced with a very hard issue. With his wife murdered by two young boys, and a son asking when she is going to come home, he has to deal with the matter in a way to benefit not only his son but also himself. With the new knowledge that forgiveness is a way to not only better his heart and body but also his soul. He has taken the horrifying situation and turned it into a grand

The definition of equity is based on treating people with equality and not creating that difference among individuals. Gender is the physical, behavioral, cultural, and psychological qualities associated with one sex. When combined, gender equity is the state of fairness or justice given to people of both sexes. Given that this â€Å"equity† has rarely been achieved, literature as life proclaims this as a major issue. In Sophocles’ play, Antigone, the main character Antigone is disobedient, impulsive, and temperamental. Against all prohibitions, she buries her brother because according to her, this is the message she had received from the gods. She considered this action to be the best thing she could have done. Being a female restricted her rights. Gender equity issues also exist in Henrik Ibsen’s play, A Doll’s House. During all of Nora’s life, she has followed right behind her father and her husband. She does not know herself and has to leave them in order to gai n independence. Gender equity is not only seen in literature, it is an issue that us seen in our everyday life. It is commonly seen in sports and several other activities that include the participation of males and/or females. Throughout time, males and females have not shared equal rights. Although men and women are in most cases qualified for the same positions, they frequently do not get paid the same amount of money. Males have always dominated and are known for being â€Å"superior†. Women earn $0.765 when men earn $1.00 doing the same exact work. Wage discrimination, says Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman, â€Å"remains an unfortunate reality for many women† (Elder 1). Even famous males and females do not get the same amount of money. For example, the NBA’s best basketball player, Shaquille ONeal, got $17.4 million this year. Meanwhile, the WNBAs best player, Cynthia Cooper, makes $75,798. They both play the same position and the same amount of time. Why is it that men get more than women? Our society has expectations about appropriate behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values for males and different others for females. Females are generally expected to be gentle and dependent, wh ile males are expected to be noisy, aggressive, and independent. Gender equity means equal access to participation in physical activity and sports, which both are positions of responsibility in sport organizations. In addition to sport wise activities, gender dissimilarity exists in such a way that it actually exist in salary between male and female university faculty members!. According to a 1998 report the Higher Education Research Institute, 63% of male professors are given a position, while only 43% female professors take status. According to that same report, the wage gap between the average full-time male and female professor was $7000.00, and ten years later, in 1999, the overall difference has dropped only $1000.00 to $6000.00. Wage salaries between men and women have always been unequal. In a university world, women are seen as the overloaded ones with student advising, and frequently pressures of family and motherhood. Therefore, having seen the perspective that women have, it is obvious that men get paid better. Public and private universities have different salaries for professors. For example, in a public independent university, a male is paid $67,175, while a female is paid $59,4 68, which is much less. In a private college, a male professor is paid $80,018, while a female is paid $69,455. The way in which professors are paid as a result of gender equity is absolutely unreasonable. If faculty does not include work created by women, the falculty is sending the message that women are not active contributors in that field of study. This happened recently in 2005, with Harvard’s Mathematics Department and chancellor (Sarah Banet-Weiser). It is hard to understand that there is a vast gap that exists between the rights of men and women. This is an issue that does not only exist in the difference of the wages of men and women, but this is gender equity issue also exist in other areas such as the media. Different Cultures around the world have as a stereotypical representation suggestion that men are always better than women, such as in the patriarchal family. Why does the man have to have superiority over the female of the house or family?. Men are portrayed as the intelligent, able, proficient and talented. Women in the other hand are portrayed as the inferior ones that are not capable of doing much. Family is the basis of ones life and it is the basis in which people learn as they grow into adulthood. Family values teach about the world and how individuals should interact with others. Gender roles are the basis of a family: the father is the head of the family, and the mother is responsible for the house. Gender roles are not influenced by family values; gender roles are nothing but prejudices under a different name. Gender role puts people into a mold of what other individuals wants them to be. Women in Ancient Greece were not citizens, held no property, and without a doubt were not even allowed out of the house except under guard. Antigone, the antagonist, rebels against the protagonist, Creon. At an early point in the play, Antigone is determined to carry her mission to bury her beloved brother to the grave with her. Antigone chooses to serve the gods while Creon makes the state his top priority. Creon is a strong-minded, stubborn tyrant who only cares for himself. Creon is flawless, unreasonable, and he gets too angry. In other words, he is a sexist ruler. He mentions that while he is alive, no woman shall rule over him. Denying someone the ability to do something makes him rebel. Creon shows his view that women are worthless when he speaks to his son: â€Å"Oh Haemon, never lose your sense of judgment over a woman. The warmth, the rush of pleasure, it all goes cold in your arms, I warn you†¦a worthless woman in my house, a misery in your bed† (Sophocles 4 0). â€Å"Because Antigone is a female, and her act so public and vocal, the offense becomes particularly heinous (Bovard 19). Creon states that Polynices, the traitor is not to be buried, but his sister, Antigone, challenges the order. Antigone is a great example of a symbol of feminism and is a classic tragic hero. She has the highest ideals of human life, courage and respect for the gods. She is the model for her society. Antigone proves an example of the responsibility women have when they are trusted with power, rather than kept at home. Creon chooses harsh punishments and stubborn paths because Antigone was a woman. Antigone looks forward on burying her brother as a natural right and duty. It is right, and it is her right. â€Å"She has tolerated it as the merely inevitable medium for what she has to do and endure, the honouring of her brother’s death and the suffering of her own. She has scorned the interval between the two. It is only now that she is forced to wait for her own death that her sense being in time begins to expand† (Poole 170). Creon is afraid he will look weak if he allows Antigones deed to go without punishment. The gods have not abandoned her, yet she has never required their help or questioned their consent. This insistence on her desire puts her in a line of tragic heroes. Antigones gender has profound effects on the significance of her actions. Creon himself says that the need to defeat her and her case is because of being a woman. The freedom of Greek women was extremely limited; the rules and regulations were immense. Antigones rebellion is especially threatening because it upsets gender roles and hierarchy. By refusing to be passive and flexible, she turns around the basic rules of her culture. There is a contrast between Antigone and Ismene. When faced with injustice, the two women react in very different ways. Ismene chooses to do nothing, and Antigone chooses to act. Later, Antigone proves again and again that she is the character with the most arrogance. She is perhaps the only character in the play that goes with her fate because that is her principle. Antigone places family before the law. A Doll’s House portrays a female viewpoint of a male-dominated society. These actions are described using the actions of a woman, Nora, who rebels against the injustices caused upon her gender. Gender inequity is the social expectation and she is not encouraged to work. She tells Christina Linden: â€Å"Well, and besides that, I made money in other ways. Last winter I was so lucky- I got a heap of copying to do. I shut myself up every evening and wrote far on into the night. Oh, sometimes I was so tired, so tired. And yet it was splendid to work in that way and earn money. I almost felt as if I was a man† (Ibsen 149). Nora’s departure was only a symbol of her liberty, the gesture of a newly awakened personality. Nora must decide where the line between right and wrong is drawn. In order to save her husbands life, Nora forges her fathers name on a promised note. Both women break the law using similar justifications. Both Antigone and Nora step into the spotlight as the female hero who has been put in a compromising situation and is forced to decide whether it is more important to follow what society dictates, or go with what they feel is moral and just. Antigone does so under the idea that the Gods dictated that all men deserved a proper burial. Likewise, Nora commits her crime with the belief that since it is saving a life, her situation is an exception to the rules. Both Creon and Helmer are arrogant men, who put too much value on their position of authority; Creon so much so that he is willing to put an order that disobey the laws of the Gods. Both men are close-minded and too stubborn to see that they could be wrong. When Nora reveals her crime to Helmer, the audience expects to see a grateful and understanding husband, but instead is greeted with a unpleasant and unappreciative man who does not see the true purpose of Noras deed. â€Å"Mirror† by Sylvia Plath Essay The poem â€Å"Mirror† by Sylvia Plath is told from the point of view of a mirror hanging up on a wall. This mirror has, over time, been privy to the tears of a woman over who she sees in it, desperate grasps at moonlit lies, and the endless speculations of a pink with speckles wall. â€Å"Mirror† is a poem that probes into the corners of human nature, beauty, life, and death, reflecting back their truths to readers as good mirrors do. In this poem, readers can see the truth about themselves reflected among the words as though the poem itself is a mirror, too. Just as the poem reflects truths to readers, so the mirror in it reflects truths to the woman it sees every day. It is objective about everything it observes in the woman, for it can have no biases simply owing to the nature of its stature. The description the mirror gives of itself in the first few lines is that â€Å"I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions./Whatever I see I swallow immediately/Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike./I am not cruel, only truthful-/The eye of the little god, four cornered.† It is giving, true to its nature, a frank description of itself—nonjudgmental and unprejudiced of its admirers. Mirrors never have and never will pass any judgment on their gazers. They leave that for the gazers themselves to do, and they always do just that, as is human nature. The mirror prides itself on that same clear-cut honesty of the faces it regurgitates back for judgment. It is almost arrogant about it, refusing to falter in its own perfection for a moment, even as â€Å"she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon† which cast false shadows upon her face. It continues to reflect the woman honestly, even though she cannot see it, so that when she learns of the lies and turns back, there she is in all her self-perceived imperfection. Not one person, the woman of the poem included, has ever been judged by a mirror, but rather through it. It is because of it that the woman can see her outer self, so also because of it, she sometimes forgets her inner self. She forgets the pink behind the speckles on the wall of her face, seeing only that the speckles are marring the beauty of it. The mirror, however, does not see the destruction the woman sees, for she is the only one of the two who has the desire to judge. She was the only true master of herself, but she ended up caving in under her preconceived notions of society’s view of her. She became a slave to the mirror and her interpretations its truths. One of these truths is age. No one has yet achieved immortality, and so death is still a formidable foe. Mirrors  reflect the coming of this rival in the rivulets and creases found in a face of age, and many people obsess over this manifesting. In the poem, according to the mirror, â€Å"I am important to her. She comes and goes./Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness./In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman/Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.† The woman in the poem â€Å"h as drowned a young girl† in her obsessions, aging her into â€Å"an old woman . . . like a terrible fish.† With each day, the manifestation becomes more pronounced because â€Å"Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.† She wasted away in front of that mirror so that now, death â€Å"Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.† She hates the mirror’s honesty on the matter, but cannot turn away. She is unable to resist knowing that death is creeping ever closer every day. She lives her life, it seems, around that knowledge, convinced that she should not be as she is. She is, as the poem says, â€Å"Searching . . . for what she really is.† She is unaware that all around her, death is marking others down for capture with the lines of age. All she knows is that she has gone from â€Å"pink, with speckles† into a world of darkness that she disapproves of seeing in the mirror. She does not seem to under stand that in fact, no one will be left unaffected. â€Å"The eye of the little god† will seek out everyone from all four corners of the globe. In the end, her obsession kills her, the â€Å"terrible fish† having finally made it to the surface. The woman in the poem lives and dies within it, mirroring any and all readers’ lives in that. The poem offers up a universal reflection of a person for readers to judge themselves. After all, it is a mirror and that is what mirrors do.

Wuthering Heights centers around the story of Heathcliff. The first paragraph of the novel provides a vivid physical picture of him, as Lockwood describes how his â€Å"black eyes† withdraw suspiciously under his brows at Lockwood’s approach. Nelly’s story begins with his introduction into the Earnshaw family, his vengeful machinations drive the entire plot, and his death ends the book. The desire to understand him and his motivations has kept countless readers engaged in the novel. Heathcliff, however, defies being understood, and it is difficult for readers to resist seeing what they want or expect to see in him. The novel teases the reader with the possibility that Heathcliff is something other than what he seems—that his cruelty is merely an expression of his frustrated love for Catherine, or that his sinister behaviors serve to conceal the heart of a romantic hero. We expect Heathcliff’s character to contain such a hidden virtue because he resembles a hero in a romance novel. Traditionally, romance novel heroes appear dangerous, brooding, and cold at first, only later to emerge as fiercely devoted and loving. One hundred years before Emily Brontà « wrote Wuthering Heights, the notion that â€Å"a reformed rake makes the best husband† was already a clichà © of romantic literature, and romance novels center around the same clichà © to this day. However, Heathcliff does not reform, and his malevolence proves so great and long-lasting that it cannot be adequately explained even as a desire for revenge against Hindley, Catherine, Edgar, etc. As he himself points out, his abuse of Isabella is purely sadistic, as he amuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still come cringing back for more. Critic Joyce Carol Oates argues that Emily Brontà « does the same thing to the reader that Heathcliff does to Isabella, testing to see how many times the reader can be shocked by Heathcliff’s gratuitous violence and still, masochistically, insist on seeing him as a romantic hero. It is significant that Heathcliff begins his life as a homeless orphan on the streets of Liverpool. When Brontà « composed her book, in the 1840s, the English economy was severely depressed, and the conditions of the factory workers in industrial areas like Liverpool were so appalling that the upper and middle classes feared violent revolt. Thus, many of the more affluent members of society beheld these workers with a mixture of sympathy and fear. In literature, the smoky, threatening, miserable factory-towns were often represented in religious terms, and compared to hell. The poet William Blake, writing near the turn of the nineteenth century, speaks of England’s â€Å"dark Satanic Mills.† Heathcliff, of course, is frequently compared to a demon by the other characters in the book.

Introduction Interests in the study of economic growth and development have been on the increase especially since the middle of the present century. Economic growth results in the expansion of a country’s production possibility curve such that the potential output of the country is increased beyond the previous levels. Thus growth is often defined in terms of a sustained increase in the real per capita income of a country.Simon Kuznets in (Todaro, 1885), defined a country’s economic growth as â€Å"a long term rise in the capacity to supply increasingly diverse economic goods to its population, this growing capacity based on advanced technology and the institutional and ideological adjustments that it demands†. Growth is therefore measurable and objective. It describes expansion in capital, in the labour force, in output, income, consumption e. t. c.It should be noted that economic growth is sometimes used interchangeably with economic development. A distinction of the two was however made by (Jhingan, 1976) where he defined economic development as the ‘non-quantifiable measure of the growing economy† i. e. the economic, social and other changes that lead to growth such as changes in techniques of production, social attitudes and institutions e. t. c. No matter the distinction what is important in the words of (Iyoha, 1996) is that there is no development without growth.One point that must be mentioned however is that in practice, economic growth is used to describe the process of growth in advanced industrialized countries while economic development is used to describe the dynamics of growth in low income non-industrialized countries. This position is buttressed by (Romer, 2001), where he posited that over the past few centuries, standard of living in industrialized countries has reached levels almost unimaginable to their ancestors.He affirmed that although comparisons are difficult, the best available evidence suggests that a verage real income today in the United States and Western Europe are between 10 and 30 times larger than a century ago, and between 50 and 300 times larger than two centuries ago. High rate of structural transformation of the economy.  ¦ High rate of social and ideological transformation.  ¦ Outward expansion of the developed economies i. e. the ability to reach out to the rest of the world for raw materials and markets.  ¦ The international flow of men, goods and capita. It then follows that for all these to be achieved especially for a developing economy like Nigeria some economic variables within the context of the features of the Nigerian economy must be marked upon to achieve these status mentioned above.Statement of research problem S o many blurred visions about the projection of Nigerian economy have been seen by the operators of the Nigerian economy. In the days of Abacha administration between 1993 and 1997, it was vision 2010 as led by former Head of State, Ernest Shonekan. 2010 is around the corner and nothing seems to have changed the last 15years. Another journey is being embarked upon by Yaradua and his economic team. The mission of making Nigeria one of the biggest 20 economies in the world by 2020, vision 2020-20.Whether this is achievable or not is best left for debate for scholars of economics. But if one must follow the position of Robert Solow (1956), the Ramsey-Cass-Koopman model (1928, 1965, 1965) and the Diamond model (1965), achieving the above is a function of thorough understanding of production function of a given economy. Nigeria like most countries is blessed with abundant human and natural resources, yet the economy is still groping with problems.Evidence is palpable that apart from incom e from sales of crude oil, the nation is close to zero in terms of technological advancement. The reason for this is no other than that the much needed investment to motivate technological advancement and industrialization is not forthcoming. The position of the government immediately after independence to embark upon import substitution as an industrialization strategy did not equally help matter.If investment is a catalyst for industrialization and hence economic growth, investment is made possible by another catalyst in savings. Over the years, there has not been any synergy between savings and investment in Nigeria. This problem is because of little emphasis partakers in the running of the economy are giving financial intermediation. It is in a country like Nigeria where the borrowers reign supreme at the expense of the lender.The deposit rates to the supplier of funds from the surplus units are not only meager but pittance, while the lending rates collected from the users of fu nd in the deficit unit is astronomical. So it is the issue of cutting the depositors with knife’s edge while cutting the borrower with razor’s edge. Savings is not encouraged while investment is discouraged. Economic activities slowed down, productivity neglected while economic growth in the real sense of it is stagnant.
